Mobile phone maker LG Electronics became the world’s fourth largest company in the first quarter leaving behind Sony Ericsson for the first time since 2006.

LG Electronics managed to capture the fourth position by selling 24.4 million units in the January-March period leaving behind Sony Ericsson with its sale of 22.3 million. The market is dominated by Nokia followed by Motorola and Samsung. Motorola is expected to lose out on its position due to the troubled times haunting its handset business. This leaves LG to fight it out with other global layers for a larger share of the market.

The company aims to sell 100 million handsets this year and generate an operating profit of 1 trillion Won. Read More

Apple, Moto and Sony Ericsson losing handset market share

Although global mobile handset shipments grew a healthy 14 per cent year on year, to reach 282 million units the first quarter, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and Apple all lost market share to stronger competitors.

According to figures released by research house Strategy Analytics on Monday, emerging markets in Asia and Africa drove the surge in growth, compensating for sluggish demand in developed regions of North America and Western Europe.

Neil Mawston, director at Strategy Analytics, said, “Motorola, Sony Ericsson and Apple suffered downturns. Motorola and Sony Ericsson lost marketshare to rivals with stronger handset portfolios, such as LG and Samsung, while Apple has been hit by stock outs in North America and lackluster demand for its overpriced iPhone in Western Europe.”

Still a newcomer to the mobile handset market, Apple saw global handset shipments fall sharply, from 2.3 million units in the fourth quarter of last year to 1.7 million units in the first quarter of 2008. This resulted in the first decline in the company’s market share, which dropped from 0.7 per cent to 0.6 per cent. Read More

The PSP is a definite multimedia platform, and AT&T is selling a metric assload of Walkmen phones from Sony-Ericsson, but both of these devices have limited sources of media to take advantage of.

PS3 owners have long enjoyed the ability to rip disks or downloadable content for their portable devices, but what if you’re an Xbox 360 fan? Enter the BDZ-A70, a set-top DVR-style device that automatically formats content for your portable Sony devices. Pretty cool, really. Read More About It
